The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

by Rebecca Skloot
"In The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, journalist Rebecca Skloot unearths the story of a woman who is indirectly responsible for some of modern medicine's most stunning achievements. Henrietta Lacks was an impoverished tobacco farmer who died in the mid-20th century, but her cells, which were harvested without her knowledge or consent, became an integral part of many 20th century medical breakthroughs. Henrietta's cells were reproduced thousands and thousands of times and used in medical research. Although her cells helped find cures for diseases and generated fortunes, Henrietta's own family never profited from her contribution. This volume explores Henrietta's contributions to medical science and the tragic price she and her family have had to pay."
